Therefore, their input in any ERP Software purchase is invaluable, but should you really put your entire software selection project on the IT Department?

ERP Software is robust and is designed to cover all aspects of manufacturing operations.  ERP is the perfect marriage of technology and operations. This is why it is vital to marry operations, business processes, and IT in the ERP selection process and implementation process.

A key role in the ERP implementation process is a Project Manager. The ideal ERP Project Manager will actually have experience with the business and technology involved with the implementation. There are business decisions, as well as technological decisions that will have to be made throughout the implementation process.  These decisions may include changing a current business process, and determining the effects of the new ERP system on each department within an organization, and creating realistic goals for the project.

A project manager will also assist in developing the budget and in creating continuity and synergy among the different departments. Even though many departments may be part of the same organization, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they speak the same language and understand each others processes.

Having a project manager that specializes in technology, and another one that specializes in business process is not a good idea.  It can leave the implementation team confused about who is truly leading the project and opens the door for miscommunication.

A project manager may be someone internal or external. There may be an individual within the organization that has demonstrated excellent problem solving skills, as well as an aptitude for the business. But don’t be afraid to interview a professional project manager.  Ask for recommendations.  This is an extraordinarily important role to fill, so make sure you place someone in the position that truly understands the scope of the project and is realistic about the goals and deadlines.  Think of the project manager role as your ERP project champion, and consider what qualities you value in your champion.
